Meet The Governors

Jenny Barnard-Langston JP – Chair of Governors – Local Authority Governor

Clive Bolton – Vice Chair of Governors – Co-opted Governor

I have been involved in education for over 30 years covering the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors. My work has ranged from teaching mathematics and computing to being the director for curriculum and quality at a large further education college. I was an Ofsted inspector in further education and was also employed as a consultant for the National College for Teaching and Leadership.

I have considerable HR experience which encompassed performance management, recruitment, selection, equal opportunities and capability issues. Having originally trained as a statistician I like working with data to bring about school improvement. Currently I am vice chair of governors and I lead the governor data group, which uses data to scrutinise pupil progress. I also chair the Partnership Committee covering Benfield and Hangleton primary schools.

I am committed to the idea of lifelong learning including keeping up to date with current education policy. I am now retired from full time work but enjoy using my skills as a co-opted governor.

Sarah Brooking – Co-opted Governor

I am the chair of the Curriculum and Pupil Progress committee and am also part of the Strategic Action Committee. I became a parent governor as I am passionate about teaching and learning and the excitement and opportunity that education should bring. A key priority is that all learners should make good progress and achieve the best that they can. I bring to the role seventeen years of teaching in a primary school, many of which in senior leadership, and am currently an Education Adviser for West Sussex.

Donna McClements - Co-opted Governor

I joined the governing body in November 2012, shortly after my eldest daughter started in Reception; my youngest daughter will be starting in Reception in September 2014.

Like any other parent I want to ensure my children receive the highest standard of education possible and I want their school experience to be a good one. Benfield Primary School is currently undergoing a huge transition, I am committed to ensuring that standards continue to improve and that our school becomes an outstanding one which is a first choice for parents in this part of the city and offers all pupils the high standard of education they deserve.

I am a member of the Resources Committee and have been given the specific role of Health and Safety Governor; this role utilises my own professional skills as an Environmental Health Officer. I am required to carry out regular site inspections, as well as ensuring that the school has effective systems in place to manage health and safety and provide a safe environment for pupils, staff, parents and visitors.

I am also the Training and Development Governor a role which involves identifying the training needs of the governing body and encouraging governors to attend training courses which meets their needs. I evidence the training undertaken by governors as this shows the commitment of the governing body to improving its skills and knowledge. I believe that appropriate governor training enhances individual governor skills and therefore contributes directly to a well informed and effective governing body.

Scott Theobold – Co-opted Governor

When I joined the governing body at the end of 2011, all 3 of my children were at Benfield and felt I could use my professional expertise to help the development of the school. I am currently vice chairperson of the Resources Committee.

I am a fully registered architect running my own practice specialising in residential property. One of my first roles as an architect was working for Essex County Council Architecture Dept. contributing mainly to educational projects including the design and completion of a new primary school in Clacton-on-Sea.

Outside of my professional life I am also manager of Fishersgate Flyers U6 and U10 teams and hold an FA Level 1 coaching qualification. We have several Benfield pupils in our teams which is great. I am also a keen squash player and cyclist.

Denise Groves - Parent Governor

I am a parent of girls in year 6 and year 3 and I am passionate about the quality of education our children receive. My vision is for Benfield to gain a consistent reputation as somewhere every child feels happy, safe and stimulated to reach their full potential, through a varied, exciting curriculum.

As a web developer for an international network of colleges, I am analytical, organised and a good team-player. I am often required to respectfully challenge requests and suggest alternative solutions. I aim to apply the same scrutiny as a governor, doing my best to ensure Benfield children are happy and successful. Since joining the governing body in November 2015, I have been a member of both the Resources committee as well as the Pupils and Learning Committee.
